As Nigeria begins preparations for the 2027 general elections, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has stressed the importance of adequate and sustained funding to ensure effective security and logistics for the polls.

Amupitan made the remarks on Wednesday in Owerri, Imo State, while delivering a goodwill message at the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers, themed “Developing a Nigeria Police Roadmap for Effective Management of Security During Elections.” 

The INEC chairman explained that while the Commission’s funding is constitutionally provided as a first-line charge on the Consolidated Revenue Fund, the scale and complexity of its responsibilities require continued financial support.

According to him, adequate funding is particularly important for the deployment of electoral personnel and materials across local government areas, wards and polling units. He cautioned that even where security agencies succeed in maintaining peace, inadequate logistics could still create serious operational challenges during the electoral process. 

Amupitan said INEC has placed security and logistics among its priorities as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify, adding that the Commission is working with the government and security agencies to address potential operational challenges before they affect the polls.

He also highlighted the importance of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), which brings INEC together with relevant security and government agencies to coordinate election-security preparations.

The warning comes as the electoral commission moves deeper into preparations for the 2027 general elections. INEC has already released the timetable for the polls and said it is committed to strengthening engagement with security agencies, improving logistics and ensuring that electoral activities are conducted in a peaceful environment. 

For INEC, the preparations for 2027 extend beyond the organisation of voting itself. The commission has repeatedly emphasised that the safety of voters, election officials and electoral materials, combined with effective logistics and inter-agency coordination, will be essential to the smooth administration of the elections.

With the 2027 electoral cycle approaching, Amupitan’s message places funding, security coordination and logistical preparedness at the centre of the wider discussion about election administration and the protection of Nigeria’s democratic process.
